FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 14, 2025
RICHMOND – Delegate Mike Cherry (R-Colonial Heights) released the following statement regarding House Bill 2232:
“Over the last few days HB2232 has garnered a fair amount of attention. This bill was not intended in any way to take revenue from Petersburg, but rather–as my job demands–lift up the entire region. It was particularly disappointing that, in public discussions surrounding the bill, city officials decided it was appropriate to resort to name calling. The residents of Petersburg deserve so much better from their government.
“Revenue sharing was always part of the discussion surrounding the Petersburg casino project, and it played into my decision to vote yes on the bill that authorized last November’s referendum. And while those conversations did regretfully pause following Election Day, I am glad that regional leaders are once again discussing this important matter. I hope that they can focus not necessarily on revenue sharing, but specifically on accountability.
“Contingent upon a meeting of city and county officials taking place on Thursday, I am prepared to withdraw HB 2232 from consideration this legislative session. It is my sincere hope that these discussions will be fruitful and result in a stronger and more stable Petersburg. And I further hope that these conversations will take place without devolving to name calling.”
